Plant Your Seed Plots Now
Saturday, August 1st, 2015
Serious deer hunters know how beneficial food plots can be in the health and size of deer. An average adult deer will consume 6 pounds of feed per day. This means that one deer can be supported on roughly 22 acres. However, body size, health and antler size are going to be well under their potential because of the poor average protein content of the native vegetation. Deer need about 16% protein to express their potential, especially during fawn rearing and antler growth.
Some would argue that supplemental feeding is enough. But even if you do it right it is shown that no matter what you feed or how you feed it deer will only consume 20% to 25% of their diet from the supplemental feed. So you are not making a big enough impact on their nutritional intake.
J & N Feed and Seed has food plot seed mixes. Stop by and get ready to plant your seed plot today.
Know The Signs Of Heatstroke In Pets
Monday, July 27th, 2015
Heat stroke is a serious condition that unfortunately occurs all too often in dogs and cats. Your pet can succumb to heat stroke when his body’s core temperature rises excessively — typically to 105 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Dogs and cats are especially vulnerable to heat stroke because their furry bodies cannot sweat to dissipate heat.
Certain breeds and animals are more susceptible to heat stroke. If your animal is overweight, elderly or already has a heart condition, is it imperative that you take special care to ensure your pet is well hydrated and has access to ample cool space. If your animal does overheat, it’s important to know the warning signs.
- Rapid panting or particularly heavy breathing
- Lethargy or mild weakness
- Increased heart rate
- Dizziness
- Drooling
- An elevated body temperature of 104 or more degrees Fahrenheit
- Seizures
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomit
If your animal exhibits any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately and move your pet to a cool, shady location. Begin to cool your pet’s body by placing cool, wet towels over the back of the neck, in the armpits and in the groin region. You may also wet the earflaps and paws with cool water. CAUTION: Using very cold water can actually be counterproductive. Cooling too quickly and especially allowing his body temperature to become too low can cause other life-threatening medical conditions.

State of Texas Agriculture Relief Fund
Wednesday, July 1st, 2015
Local farmers and ranchers in our region have been devastated by the severe weather, tornadoes and flooding this past spring. To assist in the recover effort, the Texas Department of Agriculture established the STAR fund to help with the relief efforts from these events. The counties that are eligible to receive assistance in our remote area are: Young, Jack, Wise, Parker, Palo Pinto, Throckmorton, Archer, Baylor and Montague. For a complete list of counties eligible for assistance, visit Texas Department of Agriculture’s website.
The STAR Fund (State of Texas Agriculture Relief Fund) was created solely with monetary donations from private individuals and companies, including Farm Credit, Valero and McCoy’s Building Supply. STAR Fund money may be used to assist farmers and ranchers in rebuilding fences, restoring operations and paying for other agricultural disaster relief. As natural disasters continue to impact Texas farmers and ranchers, the need for donations continues.
If you are a farmer or rancher whose property was damaged by the severe weather and your property is located in a county listed in the Governor’s disaster proclamations, you may be eligible for assistance.
For questions of eligibility and how to apply for disaster relief assistance, visit the Texas Department of Agriculture website or contact TDA’s Grants Office by phone at (512) 463-6908 or by email at [email protected].
We need your help to replenish the STAR Fund, so that TDO can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of our fellow Texans. As natural disasters continue to impact Texas farmers and ranchers, the need for donations continues to grow. Help make a difference in your community, visit TexasAgriculture.gov to make your donation to the STAR fund today.

Wet Weather Lawn Care Tips
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015Try to avoid walking on wet or damp grass, as it is likely to damage it. If a lawn has been waterlogged for several days, wait until water levels have completely subsided and you can walk on it without leaving wet footprints.
If you want to mow the lawn once it has dried out, set the mower blades to the highest possible cutting height. Do not attempt to mow a wet or saturated lawn as you risk compaction and ruts. And obviously do not use an electric lawn mower in damp or wet conditions.
If the lawn has been flooded, be aware that any silt left behind may be contaminated, so wear rubber boots, disposable rubber gloves and cover any open wounds before working outside. You should attempt to remove silt, along with any debris from the lawn – either by hosing or raking it off. Unfortunately, if your lawn has been submerged for over a week or if it is covered with more than ¾ inches of silt there is a possibility that it will need to be re-laid, but this along with any major lawn repairs will need to wait until early spring.
Lawns that have been very wet will benefit from some serious aeration – either manually using a garden fork or with the help of a powered aerator. Moss is also likely to build up in damp conditions, but remedial treatments like aeration, scarifying, top-dressing or re-seeding bald patches will now need to wait until next spring.
One thing you can do now is check for any particularly waterlogged or vulnerable areas of the lawn, where heavy rain collects. Make a note of those areas and consider preventative action you could take in the future, either by evening out the ground levels or improving drainage.
